ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture is an important modality of Chinese Medicine, an ancient healing system that can help treat a wide range of physical, mental and emotional conditions.

Acupuncture  is based on the Yin and Yang philosophy and the concept of a vital energy called 'Qi' circulating all over the body along a network of interconnected pathways or 'channels'.

If Qi flows freely along those pathways, there will be both emotional and physical balance and health.

If Qi becomes blocked, then symptoms of disease and/or pain may arise.  Blockage could occur through a physical injury, repetitive movement through work or a hobby, long-term stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, emotional pressure or shocks.

ACUPUNCTURE TREATMENT

Acupuncture diagnosis works to locate and treat the root cause of any ill health or imbalance, and do not only treat symptoms. Treatment consists in needling acupuncture points, i.e. precisely located anatomical points along the channel pathways at the surface of the body with very thin, sterile and single-use needles. Through specific stimulation of these points, acupuncture aims at regulating and promoting the flow and quality of the Qi and other vital substances circulating along the channels and their corresponding organs.

This helps the body to initiate its own healing and to restore normal function and balance, thus bringing the body and mind back to health.

HOW DOES IT WORK ?

From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture has been demonstrated to positively affect every major system of the body, including the cardiac, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, circulatory, endocrine and immune systems via the stimulation of the nervous peripheral system with the needles. The stimulation of key points on the peripheral nervous system generates signals relayed up the spine to the brain, which makes the  brain then initiate a variety of cascade physiological reactions such as the production of neurotransmitters and hormones which help to decrease pain, relax the muscles or increase blood flow to the painful area.

These biochemical changes overall help the body to rebalance and return to homeostasis, reduce inflammation and pain, and stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms, thus promoting general physical and emotional well-being.

ACUPUNCTURE AND RESEARCH

Modern scientific research is increasingly backing up what acupuncturists have done for over 3,500 years, during a very long history of clinical experience and practice.

The prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) now publishes a quarterly companion volume called Acupuncture in Medicine, solely devoted to acupuncture research and the World Health Organisation (WHO) lists a wide variety of diseases or disorders for which the effectiveness of acupuncture has been tested in controlled clinical trials.

For the latest research and evidence-based facts on various conditions, you can consult the A-Z Facts Sheets produced by the British Acupuncture Council (BAaCC) on their website.

Acupuncture treatment does not easily lend itself to the type of randomised clinical trials favoured by conventional medicine. If you do not see your condition listed on the BAaC website, then please do get in touch to discuss how acupuncture can help.
